A Holiday Guide to White Teeth Over Wine

As the holiday season approaches, festive gatherings often come with a clink of glasses filled with red wine. While the warmth of a good red can enhance the holiday spirit, it could also stain your teeth. If you plan on indulging this year, but worry about your teeth whitening treatment, fear not!

Continue reading to find some great tips to ensure your smile remains bright throughout the celebrations.

How Does Wine Stain Teeth?

The rich color of red wine comes from pigmented compounds called chromogens, which can adhere to the enamel of your teeth. Tannins are also present in dark-colored wines. These naturally occurring chemicals contribute further to the staining process. If that wasn’t enough, the acidity in wine can erode enamel, making it easier for stains to set in.

What Can I Do to Avoid Wine Stains?

There are many ways you can enjoy your wine while minimizing its effect on your smile, especially if you’ve recently had a teeth whitening treatment. Here are some of the best:

Drink Water

Stay well-hydrated by alternating sips of water between glasses of red wine. Water helps rinse away pigments and reduces the acidity in your mouth, mitigating the impact on your teeth.

Snack on Veggies or Cheese

Munching on foods like raw broccoli, celery, apples, or cheese while drinking wine can help prevent stains. These foods act as natural abrasives, cleaning the surface of your teeth.

Use a Straw

Opt for a straw when enjoying red wine. This minimizes direct contact between the wine and your teeth, reducing the chances of stains.

Brush It Away

Brush your teeth about 30 minutes after your wine to prevent stains from setting in. If brushing isn’t possible, immediately rinse your mouth with water to minimize the impact.

Choose Your Wine Wisely

Opt for lighter red wines, as they tend to have fewer chromogens and tannins. Pinot Noir or a light-bodied red can be delightful options with less staining potential.

Visit Your Dentist

If you haven’t had a teeth whitening treatment in a while, you might do so once the holidays are over. An in-office treatment or take-home whitening kit could be just the thing you need after the stains have settled.

Using these tips will help keep your smile merry and bright, even as you sip through the holidays. So, continue toasting and hosting as the season wears on, just don’t forget to take care of your smile. And if you need it, your dentist will be there, waiting to remove the stains of holiday cheer.
