Smiling woman pointing to her teethAnother year has flown by, which means it’s time to start thinking about your New Year’s resolutions. You might plan to eat healthier or cut back on unnecessary expenses, but is a healthy smile also on your list? It’s never too late to recommit to your dental health. Here are 5 resolutions to add to your list for healthier teeth and gums in 2023.

1. Brush Your Teeth After Every Meal

Your toothbrush is your first line of defense against preventable issues, like cavities and gum disease. The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice daily for 2 minutes. However, brushing after every meal will ensure no food residue or bacteria are lingering in your mouth.

2. Commit to Daily Flossing

Although your toothbrush is effective, it can’t clean everywhere in your mouth, like between your teeth. Daily flossing is the only way to remove plaque buildup that can lead to gum disease, which affects at least 50% of adults. Not only is it a leading cause of tooth loss, but it can also increase your risk of various health concerns, like heart disease. Flossing is an easy way to promote a healthy mouth and body.

3. Reduce Sugary Foods and Drinks

Sugary foods and drinks aren’t just bad for your waistline. They can also wreak havoc on your smile. Although cavities are preventable, 92% of adults have had at least one. Cutting back on sugars and starches will reduce your smile’s exposure to cavity-causing bacteria.

4. Drink More Tap Water

Water is important for keeping your body hydrated, but your smile also relies on it. Water keeps your mouth moist to combat oral bacteria growth and cleanses it in between brushing and flossing. It’s best to drink tap water because many public water sources contain fluoride, which strengthens enamel to make it more resistant to decay.

5. Visit Your Dentist Every 6 Months

Besides brushing and flossing, the American Dental Association recommends a cleaning and checkup every 6 months. Routine care removes plaque and tartar left behind by your toothbrush and floss. Your dentist will also monitor your oral health to detect anything concerning while it’s still small. You’ll be less likely to need treatment later. Every $1 spent on prevention can save up to $50 on restorative care to lower your overall oral health expenses. You can preserve your smile and save money with a trip to your dentist every 6 months.

You can look and feel your best in 2023 by giving your smile the attention it deserves. You’ll support your oral health and general wellness by keeping your teeth and gums healthy.
