Veneers Sound Pretty Great; Do They Come with Any Side Effects?

Lady thinks something over

Veneers were first used to change the appearance of an actor’s teeth on a Hollywood movie set, but they have since evolved into a versatile and convenient cosmetic dental treatment that has transformed countless smiles. While these devices should not harm the teeth being treated, the process can lead to several side effects. Here’s a brief guide to the side effects of veneers and how you can manage them.

You May Experience Dental Sensitivity

The process of placing veneers requires the removal of a small amount of enamel, which makes the treatment irreversible since enamel does not grow back. Teeth that receive veneers will need to wear them for protection for life, and while these devices will shelter your dental structures from injury and infection, you may experience some sensitivity while your teeth get used to wearing them.

Normally, this sensitivity should fade and disappear within the week after you receive veneers, and you can manage this discomfort until then by using over-the-counter pain medication and avoiding hot or cold foods and beverages. However, contact your dentist if the problem gets worse instead of better or persists after several days.

Your Gums May Become Inflamed

Your gums may need some time to adjust to your teeth wearing veneers, so you may develop some inflammation and discomfort in your soft tissues after receiving them. These frustrating symptoms should gradually go away on their own, and your dentist will inspect your gums for any problems during your follow-up appointment. If your gums are still uncomfortable after several days, contact your oral healthcare professional for help.

Your Smile May Become Unevenly Bright

Many people receive veneers to address unsightly dental stains, but some may find that their veneers are brighter than their natural enamel. If this happens when you are wearing temporary veneers, the problem will probably be rectified when you receive your customized final appliances. However, this can also happen because of your natural teeth becoming discolored while your stain-resistant veneers remain the same shade. You can address this issue with teeth whitening treatments or by having your veneers replaced at your dentist’s office.

Excellent oral hygiene is a great way to prevent complications and keep your recovery process smooth after receiving veneers. Consulting with your dentist can help you find the best ways to stay comfortable after transforming your smile.
